The oil from damiana leaves contains a chemical substance known as terpenes. Research links terpenes with several other substances that make up the sexual communication chemicals known as pheromones. This effect on progesterone may explain why the herb can increase libido, primarily because of this progesterone-binding capability. Scientific studies associate progesterone deficiency, particularly in post-menopausal women, to decreased libido. So, if the binding of damiana extract to progesterone receptors can mimic the action of progesterone, damiana could theoretically lead to increased libido in women with a progesterone deficiency.

Other herbs that help to round out this product are epimedium, horny goat weed and mucuna. Epimedium is another aphrodisiac; recent research shows it too may increase both male and female sexual performance and well-being. Research done in Shanghai and in the U.S. has reported that horny goat weed boosts libido, improves blood flow to the genitals and may even help to mitigate menopausal discomfort.
